Fans of the historical romances of Sabrina Jeffries, Loretta Chase, and Jo Beverley will enjoy this sexy, award-winning romance by New York Times bestselling author Candice Hern.
Meet the Merry Widows – a group of respectable ladies with a secret pact that is anything but respectable! The five friends who act as patronesses of charity balls are assured of money and position. None are interested in marrying again. But they have no intention of forsaking physical passion for the rest of their lives. Instead, they make a daring pact to seek out lovers for the pure pleasure of it.
Marianne Nesbitt adored her late husband, David, but the racy reminiscences of the Merry Widows make her wonder if she missed something special. Might she find it now through a love affair? Uncertain how to go about it, she asks Adam Cazenove, an old friend and notorious rake, to tutor her in the arts of seduction.
The brazen request turns Adam's world upside down. He never imagined his best friend's very proper and exceedingly attractive widow would seek out a lover. If not for his recent betrothal to a young beauty, he would jump at the chance to warm Marianne's bed. Since he cannot bear the thought of another man doing so, he foils her every attempt at seduction.
Until one night of unintended passion changes everything.
"Hern gracefully crafts a tale of friendship and romance between two beautifully matched protagonists that is delectably sexy, delightfully clever, and simply superb." – Booklist
"Funny, fresh, and outrageously original, this lively, Regency-set historical hooks readers from the start and sweeps them right on to the satisfying conclusion." – Library Journal (starred review)
"IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT is a fresh, fun, and fabulous frolic! Only Candice Hern can be both naughty and nice at the same time!" – NY Times Bestselling author Teresa Medeiros
"IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT is a sparkling celebration of female friendship that offers a fresh spin on the most beloved themes of romance. It is outrageously sexy fun as only Candice Hern can deliver. Every page is pure satisfaction." -- NY Times Bestselling author Lisa Kleypas
"IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT involves a high-spirited Wodehousian house party, and a glimpse into the rarefied Regency society world through the lens of Marianne and Adam's atypical friendship. Hern brings uncommon warmth to her exploration of Marianne's resistance to sacrificing the rest of her life to her husband's memory. It takes considerable courage for her to embrace her new path, and Hern doesn't stint on showing that. An accomplished writer with a sharp eye for character, Hern also possesses a great sense of fun that leaves a smile after the book is finished." – Contra Costa Times

I always enjoy a different twist on a romance novel and this is different. Usually it is the man who tries to avoid matrimony but a group of widows decide they have no intention of marrying again and the suggestion that they each take a lover meets with some agreement but not with great enthusiasm. The widow who made the suggestion has already indulged and recommends it as a good thing. Marianne is dubious at first but eventually warms to the idea. She is the first of the group to try it out but an obstacle in the form of her late husbands friend, who she confides in, puts a few spokes in her wheels. One must read the story to find out how things work themselves out and of course, they do. This is the first Candice Herb book for me and it won't be the last.Product details

In the Thrill of the Night The Merry Widows Book 1 edition by Candice Hern Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
this is the beginning of the Merry Widows series by Candice Hern and Marianne's book really had me pissed off at David, who did everything in his power to make sure she never had a lover. Unless it was he, himself, who had just became engaged to a young woman, all wrong for him
Candice makes you feel like you are there in that time frame. I enjoy this time period because its fun to go back in time and Candice give enough details that you can see it all in your mind. For me it is just fun to sit back and enjoy the story. My son got me my a couple of years ago (just love it), I take it to work and read during lunch every day and Candice Hern males my lunch something I look forward to and can relax and enjoy break.
I enjoyed this book enough to reread it recently. The Merry Widows are well-to-do widows with no intention of marrying again. They are involved in philanthropic activities(the Beneovlent Widows Fund) to raise money for widows who were less fortunate.
They decide that while they don't want a husband, they might appreciate a lover.
Read to find out who is first and how it happens.
I have enjoyed several Candice Hern's books.
Each week five benevolent young widows meet to discuss raising monies for a worthy cause. The book opens with the most lively and outspoken of the group sharing her tale of being a merry widow. She convinces the other members to give the idea of taking a lover some serious thought. What ensues for the lovely Mrs. Nesbitt is what begins as a lighthearted romp across balconies, sitting rooms, and bedrooms that leads her straight into the arms of the true love of her life. Candice Hern's tale is seamless and is told as smoothly as a martini made for James Bond goes down. This is an excellent sign for the rest of the series.
What a great novel! A good story that was actually interesting with characters whom I actually cared about. Humour and cheek were found in plenty and yet there was a bittersweetness to this particular tale that sets it apart and balances perfectly. True, this is not a squeaky clean Regency. But it is no bodice-ripper either. The sex scenes were surprisingly few and very nicely done, at least in my opinion. For the most part it is a solid traditional regency romance with just a dash of spice. The writing is amazing. I am looking forward to the remainder of the series The Merry Widows. Excellent stuff. Very very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
i have always always enjoy Hern's writing, which is full of wit, humour, sensual, beautiful romance.
She does not disappoint with this. i adore cruising along with Adam and Marianne as move forward from just friendship, to a level deeper and so lovely. The secondary characters (the other "merry widows", Lord Rochdale, and even the sub-plot of clarrissa and sherwood) all make the whole story so much more like a cup of hot chic on a cold night rather than tepid tea.
love this )
How clever it was. A Comedy of Errors. Shakespeare would have been proud. I laughed and sighed. Nothing surprising yet delightfully unpredictable in its predictability.
Adam was just the best sort of best friend one could ever want. And Marianne suited him just right. For the two of them to be at odds throughout the book kept me on edge wondering how Ms. Hern was going to get them together. And I was not disappointed.
And the Merry Widows. How wonderful to read about a group of women during the Regency period who formed such a strong bond and who supported each other as they did. So refreshing.
As was this book. I am eagerly beginning the next one.
